Introducing MERC

The

Our story

The Maritime Emissions Reduction Centre (MERC) was established through the joint initiative of six founding members — Capital Ship Management, Navios Maritime Partners, Neda Maritime Agency, Star Bulk, Thenamaris, and Lloyd’s Register Maritime Decarbonisation Hub. These organisations united around a common purpose: to accelerate the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from the global shipping fleet.

Each founding member brings a unique set of capabilities, perspectives, and commitments. Together, they have created a neutral, collaborative platform designed to deliver practical, scalable solutions. MERC focuses on enabling evidence-based innovation and supporting the maritime sector’s transition to a more efficient, lower-emissions future.

Supported by Lloyd’s Register

Lloyd’s Register supports MERC by providing corporate infrastructure and hosting the Centre at its offices in Athens, allowing MERC to focus its full resources on programmatic impact. This includes administrative functions and foundational operational support.

In addition, Lloyd’s Register contributes its global market presence, technical expertise, regulatory insight, and longstanding experience in maritime innovation. This strategic support strengthens MERC’s capacity to convene the industry, foster collaboration, and deliver real-world solutions for shipping decarbonisation.
